Required fields, not writing advice

The “Check it” sections on the node pages are writing-quality advice. The fields below are what actually block Test and Submit for Review. When one is missing, the editor produces no testable version and lists the field as a blocker.

Conditionally required

  • For Script Entry, choosing Join an existing series requires a series, and New series requires a series name. Do not fill both.
  • For an ending, choosing the global check trigger mode requires a trigger condition.

Connection checks

Beyond fields, the editor checks how nodes connect:
  • The Script Entry must connect to exactly one act;
  • Every act needs a main-route exit, and every route must eventually reach an ending;
  • Intelligence must have a single reveal act;
  • A status component must bind a single character;
  • An item must belong to a character or to a scene: an item with neither, or with both, blocks testing and review;
  • Every character who already appeared at this location in an earlier act must be placed here: list them under Available characters when they appear, or under Not appearing in this act when they do not;
  • A filled-in Opening location must be the location bound to the first act, and every character who speaks in the opening text must be listed under the first act’s Available characters;
  • A clue has exactly one source: an act, a character, or an item.
Fix the story structure rather than swapping connection directions just to pass the check. See Node Connections for the full direction and exclusivity rules.

Common input errors

  • Tag outside the platform genres: only Mystery, Xianxia, Campus, Fantasy, Romance, Workplace, Science fiction, Urban, Apocalypse, and Historical are allowed, at most two;
  • Age is not digits only: enter an Arabic numeral such as 32; “32 years old” or a spelled-out number fails validation;
  • Status value out of range: the minimum cannot be below -1000, the maximum cannot exceed 1000, and the minimum must be less than the maximum;
  • Status ranges are not continuous: ranges must meet end to end and cover all the way to the maximum.

When the check runs

Selecting Test and creating a test session runs the blocker check first. If anything blocks, no session is created and the page lists the problem type and location; fix the items and create the session again. Submit for Review uses the same check, so clear blockers during testing. Image fields are not part of the required-field check, but they have their own size, format, and transparency rules, documented in the image section of Script Entry, Location, Character, Item, and Ending.
